Bee Cave Games hosted The University of Texas at Austin’s Game and Mobile Media Applications (GAMMA) Program’s Fall 2015 Capstone Postmortem. On December 2nd, six student-led teams from the Capstone course presented the 2D games they created during the Fall semester to local game industry professionals at Bee Cave Games.
The GAMMA Program’s intensive Capstone course seeks to reflect the realities of the industry, except with a production cycle of only one semester. The six teams—made up of students from the Computer Science Department, College of Fine Arts, and Radio-Television-Film Department—worked together to develop six completely original 2D games using their interdisciplinary knowledge in only twelve weeks.
Attendees from Bee Cave Games were definitely impressed. “Having only attended early playtests for the Capstone games, I have never seen the end result of the development cycle,” said Nimai Malle, Chief Technical Officer at Bee Cave Games. “The conflicts the student teams ran into are problems we deal with on a daily basis. The experience gained in the Capstone course is invaluable.”
“After partnering with Bee Cave Games for over two years, I am glad GAMMA students could visit their office space and show off their talent,” said Dr. Paul Toprac, Associate Director of the GAMMA Program. “Our GAMMA students are the future of the Austin game industry, so events like this connects the dots between the present and future.”
GAMMA Capstone students will build 3D games in Spring 2016 before returning to 2D game development in Fall 2016.
The Game and Mobile Media Applications (GAMMA) Program at the University of Texas at Austin is an interdisciplinary undergraduate certificate program between the College of Fine Arts, Computer Science Department, and Radio-Television-Film Department.
